Denver consulting geophysicist-geologist R. Randy Ray, current chair of the AAPG House of Delegates, has been named the deputy editor-in-chief of the new journal INTERPRETATION, which will be published jointly by SEG and AAPG.

The publication, a peer-reviewed journal created for advancing the practice of subsurface interpretation, will be issued quarterly with the first issue due in August.

Former SEG Editor Yonghe Sun is the publication’s first editor-in-chief, serving a three-year term. The journal’s editorial board will include members of both AAPG and SEG, and the organizations will alternate the appointment of editors-in-chiefs. The group not selecting the editor-in-chief will select the deputy editor-in-chief.

Ray, a member of both AAPG (Honorary) and SEG, has specialized for nearly four decades in the interpretation of geophysical and geological data for petroleum and coal exploration.

After working as chief geophysicist and senior geophysicist for several companies – including Cities Service, Breitburn Energy and Underground Energy, PanCanadian and Encana – Ray formed his own company, R3 Exploration, in 1980, and still serves there today as president.

An author and co-author of several articles and publications, Ray in 1995 was the founder of the still-highly successful annual 3-D Seismic Symposium in Denver; was the general chair of the 2009 AAPG annual convention in Denver; and served as editor in 2001-03 of the EXPLORER’s popular Geophysical Corner.

He also was editor for the 1985 RMAG-DGS Seismic Atlas; the 1995 RMAG High-Definition Seismic Guidebook; and is the AAPG Search and Discovery editor for the Geophysical Corner website.
