Fracture Characterization
  • Date: Saturday, 19 May 2018
  • Time: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Location: Salt Palace Convention Center
  • Speaker: Dr. Julia F. W. Gale
Bureau of Economic Geology in the Jackson School of Geosciences,
    University of Texas at Austin
  • Fee: Professionals – $100, Students – $50

This one-day course will introduce participants to a range of key topics in fracture characterization. Emphasis will be on general principles and examples rather than on specific techniques. We will address qualitative and quantitative techniques for fracture description, considerations when using outcrops, fracture growth, fill and timing, and modeling of fracture systems. We will consider the relevance of fractures for fractured and unconventional reservoirs.

Motivation - why characterize fractures?
  • Application in fractured reservoirs.
  • Application in unconventional stimulated reservoirs.
What are we characterizing and where?
  • Key attributes.
  • Natural fractures in outcrop and subsurface; late joints in outcrop not related to subsurface; drilling induced fractures in core and image logs.
  • Outcrop vs subsurface: burial history and structural diagenesis.
  • Seismic fracture detection and other fracture detection techniques.
Quantitative natural fracture descriptions
  • Scaling of fracture size.
  • Fracture fill and size dependency.
  • Spatial Organization.
Fracture growth, fill and timing
  • Geomechanical modeling.
  • Modeling fracture growth and fill.
  • Fracture timing.
