Curtin University Perth Student Chapter Open Day

New AAPG chapter at Curtin University kicks off with activities and talks

Well it’s been a busy few months for the AAPG Student Chapter at Curtin University. Following on from our successful opening technical evening which featured distinguished speakers Professor Chris Elders and Mr Peter Grant was the official Guild Open Day at Curtin University. The guild Open Day provides student societies the chance to promote their organisation and interact with other stall holders and student clubs at the university. Overall, the day was a success with many new and prospective students showing great interest in the AAPG and the petroleum industry in general. We had a wide variety of scientific disciplines visit the stall including geophysicists, geochemists, geologists and spatial scientists. The day also proved to be a great forum for promoting our future events including a technical presentation by the exploration team at Inpex Oil and Gas, a student core workshop at the Carlisle core library, and a broadband seismic workshop. This was particularly evident at our technical presentation by Inpex with a great turn out of around 45 students. The presentation focused on Broadband seismic and the Inpex team of Catherine Clissold-Jones, Victoria Ratushnyak, and Mark Sloan did an excellent job of presenting the key factors around petroleum exploration and the application of broadband seismic. Moving forward we have our core workshop scheduled for October the 27th and 28th were we will be providing student members with the opportunity to view over 300 meters of core from Australia’s premier oil and gas hub on the Northwest Shelf. Following on from this event is our year ending symposium wherein we plan to host multiple speakers on a wide variety of topics in late November/early December. If any interested parties wish to contact the Curtin University Student Chapter with regards to general enquiries, sponsorship, or participation in delivering a technical presentation feel free to email us at [email protected].
