The potential of Wyoming's Niobrara shale play will be in the spotlight during this year's AAPG Rocky Mountain Section meeting, set June 25-29 in Cheyenne, Wyo.

The meeting's theme is "Energy on the Rocks," and while the technical sessions will offer a varied program, the relatively new focus on the Niobrara will be featured.

The Niobrara focus will include a field trip, core workshop and a plenary session that offers papers on such topics as:

  • Exploration and development history.
  • Facies and stratigraphy.
  • Models for accumulation and preservation of organic matter.
  • Kerogen type and thermal maturity trends across the Rocky Mountain region.
  • Mapping wireline log properties.

Also, meeting organizers have planned a public session addressing Niobrara exploration and production concerns, addressing questions on geology, land, water and governmental regulations that surround Niobrara oil and gas development. Other technical sessions will address:

  • CO2 EOR and sequestration.
  • EMD sessions on geothermal, uranium and coal.
  • Evaluation of unconventional plays.
  • Rocky Mountain structure.
  • Stratigraphy and sedimentology.
