American Association of Petroleum Geologists Hasanuddin University Student Chapter (AAPG UNHAS SC) presented a “One Day Lecture” on 17th November 2014, by two International speakers, Mr. Peter Baillie (Immediate Past President of AAPG Asia Pacific and President of SEAPEX) and Prof. Sato Tokiyuki (Akita University, Japan). It was a very good opportunity because it was the first time the President of AAPG Asia Pacific came and gave a lecture to this chapter, the only student chapter in Eastern Indonesia. The activity was opened with a welcome speech from the head of Geological Engineering Department, Mr. Asri Jaya. It was attended by 99 participants from four universities around Makassar City.

The first session was facilitated by Prof. Sato with a lecture on “Oceanography Based on Analysis of Nannofossils”. Mr. Peter Baillie presented “The Indonesian Tectonics Laboratory: A Personal Odyssey”. He explained huge differences between the west and east part of Indonesia regional tectonic settings, indicating one way to study the tectonic assemble by using “Multibeam Backscatter”. Mr. Baillie said that there is no specific way on “How to be a good Geologist”. He however suggested some ideas such as learning the basics of geology, and said “the future is yours”.

After the Q &A session, Mr. Baillie and some committee members visited Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park in Maros to see the karst tower of Tonasa Formation. It was a very interesting and unforgettable moment for our chapter.
